CIRCLE ONE SPONSORS

PRESTON SKIMBOARD COMPETITON

Circle One in conjunction with Preston Eye, The Boat House and The Preston Partnership sponsored the annual Preston beach skimboard contest. The event was held on the 14th and 15th of August. The saturday provided the heats and the weather was not ideal. The sunday produced the semi finals and finals in ideal conditions with a north easterly ground swell and sunny conditions. The event has already been highlighted on spotlight television which gives the sport of skimboarding a real boost.

CIRCLE ONE SPONSORS NORTH DEVON SCHOOL SURF CHAMPIONSHIPS (Oct 09)

Circle One believes in supporting grassroots surfing and we were delighted to help make things happen at this year’s North Devon Schools Surf Championships.

Held at the start of October half term at Saunton Sands, turn out was excellent as more than 100 young surfers from eight schools took part and highlighted the abundance of grom talent on the scene today.

With 2 to 3ft waves and clear, fine conditions, the young guns gathered to compete for individual and team glory. The tag team event was the first final to run, with teams from Ilfracombe, Park, Kingsley and Braunton cheering each other on. In the end there could be only one winner and Braunton College scooped top honours.

The girls' final was dominated by Braunton as they grabbed the top-three slots, with Laura Crane adding to her already impressive tally of results this season with a win over second-placed Harriet Knight, Lucy Cambell in third and Bideford's Harley Udden fourth.

Run at the same time on a different peak, the boys' final was a high-scoring affair with plenty of action from the off. While the waves were inconsistent, the quality of surfing from the four groms was anything but.

In the end it was Ilfracombe's Alex Gibson who charged hard and impressed the judges to finish ahead of Braunton's Alex Maddocks, Jack Hough and Bideford's Harry Jones.

Event organiser Rob Whitney was impressed by the attendence and high standards of surfing and in his post contest speech thanked the various  sponsors and supporters of the competition. The acting chair of the British Surfing Association, Kevin Cook, also praised the event calling it "a brilliant initiative to encourage and grow grassroots surfing".

European Skimboarding Championships Supported by Circle One (Oct 09)

 news/pic1.jpg

The last leg of the European skimboard competitions saw some great skill in the waters off Tolcarne in Newquay, Cornwall on the 17th and 18th of October.

There was plenty of interest in the event from over the water, with skimmers travelling from Portugal, France and Holland to compete alongside the usual UK crew made up of competitors from  Newquay, Wales and a large crowd from Torbay.

Saturday morning awoke with clear blue skies and a 3ft swell on the push for a late afternoon start. In the heats spectators and competitors alike were shown some dazzling board skills from the European skimmers in particular. However the UK skimmers also proved that they have what it takes with special congratulations to Adam Wooton and Ned Weight for reaching the semis.

In the Sunday finals, the Europeans were set to lead the way with slightly larger waves than the Saturday.

The final three placings were as follows:

1st Hugo Santos (Portugal)

2nd  Mega (Portugal)

3rd Guillaumes Muller (France)

Circle One are proud to be part of an event that gives huge encouragement to many UK skimmers and receives all round positive feedback from everyone involved. Watching the Europeans perform their impressive tricks can only help inspire a new generation of skimboarders.

CIRCLE ONE IRISH NATIONALS SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2009 PORTRUSH

news/jamie surfboard.jpg

It was a hugely successful event and truly promoted the sport of surfing along the North Coast of Ireland.  The standard of the surfing and the surfers once again proved to be very high with the finals in the Men's Open, Women's Open, Bodyboard and Longboard, being of a very high standard.

In the men's, Fergal Smith narrowly pipped Liam Joyce and Andrew Mennie to win the Irish title, with only 0.6 of a point between the three surfers.  All the finalists surfed with power and aggression with driving hard turns and cut backs in the testing 4 to 6 feet surf.  In the ladies final, Nicole Morgan edged out Easkey Britton to take back the Irish title.
In the Longboard, John McCurry once again showed why he is Irelands top longboarder, with a fine display of his both traditional and modern style. Beautiful cross stepping with hang fives, mixed with hard radical cut backs and floaters, won the day. In second place was up and coming Circle One team rider, Jamie Russell.
The whole weekend was one non-stop wave fest.  Turn out was great, with large numbers of people enjoying the surfing both on the Saturday and Sunday.

Jamie Russell Battles Euros in Morocco

Newest Circle One team member Jamie Russell has just returned from Devil's Rock, Morrocco where over a three day period he competed against the top 21 Junior Surfers in Europe to finish 13th. Jamie finished 3rd, 1st and 3rd in some tough heats. Unfortunately he was not able to find enough points in the marginal 2-3ft conditions to really challenge the top spots. Jamie states " I could have done better...The conditions weren't great but I will get it next time though! "

Congratulations!

Matt Capel Claims 5th in 2009 UK Pro Tour

Circle One Team rider Matt Capel completed the final round of the UK Professional Surf Tour to finish in 5th Place. The finishing stages of the tour saw some nail bitting action as the leading competitors were extremely close on points coming in to the triple crown events in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Unfortunately Matt's hopes of a podium finish to the tour were dashed as the surf failed to deliver in the final two events leaving Matt searching for elusive points that did not materialise. This is a strong finish to the year which saw some of the most talented surfers ever to compete on the tour provide extremely tough competition

Matt has now returned to his home waves in Eastern Australia where he will be sure to be training hard before mounting assaults on both the UK and European Tours next Season..

Rescue Sled Gets Thumbs Up from Newquay Lifesavers

news/rescue sled1.jpg

Pictured above on a Circle One Rescue Sled is Jeremy Griffith Centre owner and Head of Water Safety, Lusty Glaze with a colleague at a recent Watergate Bay Zapcat event. Whilst on safety patrol the pair kindly agreed to test the recently updated Sled from our Surf Lifesaving Range of boards. They found that the design and build improvements have provided extra stability and speed, both critical when dealing with casualties involved in severe accidents. You can see footage of the sled in action on UKTV's Seaside Rescue which follows the work of brave Coastal Rescue teams.
